about the battle

The last-ditch German offensive

Dubbed operation Wacht am Rhein by the Germans, the battle of the bulge is the very last German offensive of the Second World War. Starting on December 16th, 1944 with the objective of reaching Antwerp, it was fought in some of the worst winters of the century. Both sides suffered huge casualties, leaving fighting men as well as the local population scarred for life.
